Youth from Serbia and Montenegro get acquainted during a peacebuilding training in February in Tivat
The Balkan Youth Without Borders (BYWB) program operates in Macedonia, Kosovo, Serbia & Montenegro and Albania. The program was recently launched by the National Albanian American Council, first in Macedonia in February 2005, then Kosovo in March, in Albania in June 2005 and in Serbia & Montenegro in July 2005. Broadly, the program seeks to develop the individual capacities of youth for self-representation and constructive problem solving, to strengthen youth organizations and youth-serving agencies so they can provide services to youth and improve the ability of government and civil society to work together on youth issues, such as implementing national youth policies.
BYWB is building upon the energy and desires of youth to bring people together for constructive engagement in the affairs of their communities. Far from being disinterested or disengaged, youth have shown initiative and momentum in youth-led activities throughout the region. In a time when prospects of European Integration are coupled with concern about the economy, education, social problems and the environment, youth are seeking avenues for civic participation.
This program seeks to better prepare youth for civic participation and works to strengthen the institutions that support them.
